Topic: A Priest forever!

Opening Prayer: Dear Lord, grant me understanding and illumination as I ponder on your word in Jesus name.

Scripture: Psalm 110:1–7

Reflection
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Is there any promise for me to believe or hope for?

Message: David perhaps wrote this Psalm to be sung by the temple singers to celebrate the establishment of his throne in Jerusalem (2 Samuel 5:6─12). He, by his conquest of Jerusalem, believed that God has given him victory over all his enemies and invited him to sit in the place of supreme power (v.1).

From the hill of Zion in Jerusalem, David rules his people and all his enemies (v.2), with the aid of his loyal subjects who are committed to serving his monarchy and fighting his battles (v.3). At the same time, it appears that David was inspired by the Holy Spirit to prophesy in the psalm about the promised Messiah (v.1). After his death, Jesus was raised by the Father and was exalted to his right hand, (see Acts 2:33).

By his victory over Satan and death, King Jesus overcame all his enemies. They are all set under his feet like a mere footstool. The mighty sceptre was a sign of the king’s power and authority arrayed in holy majesty, (v.3). In v.4, Jesus is referred to as a Priest forever in the order of Melchizedek (Genesis 14:18–20; cf. Hebrews 5:7–10).

Jesus is not only our King, but also our High Priest, having offered himself as a sacrifice for our sins to bring us to God (Hebrews 7:26–27). Further Assignment: Crosscheck the prominence given to this Psalm in the NT and its direct affirmation of the deity of Christ, e.g. Matthew.22:41–45; Acts 2:34–35 etc.

Practice/Word Application
• For Meditation: Therefore, Jesus is our high priest who offered sin offering once to set mankind free from sin.

Prayer Points
• Prayer: Thank God for the privilege to have Jesus Christ as our King, High Priest and Warrior!
• Pray for the political leaders of your country to imbibe the virtues of truth, honesty and compassion for their citizens.
• Offer a prayer of faith in line with John 15:9
