TOPIC: There is no Ground for Boasting

OPENING PRAYER: Help me to understand the exceeding greatness of your power as I read through this passage, dear Lord.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE: Romans 11:11-24

Question(s) for Reflection
• Q 5: Is there any warning for me to heed?
• Q 7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?

Let them that stand be careful. The stumbling of the Jews is a practical lesson for us non-Jews that the danger of falling away from faith is real. Notice how Paul presents that in vs.18-20. But the fall was not permanent and not beyond recovery (v.11a). God had a purpose for it. When the Jews rejected the gospel, it gave the Gentile world the opportunity to be welcomed into Christ’s fold. But how have we utilised that opportunity?

When the Jews rejected Christ, they were cut off and could not claim sole Abrahamic heritage. Gentiles now belong to Abraham and become heirs of salvation. We were naturally wild stalk grafted from wild branches into good olive. In the Jewish setting, wild olives were often grafted into fruitful ones to make them more fruitful.
We, Gentiles have been grafted in by grace, hence the need to guard against self, pride, self-deception, and temptation to think we are better than the original stock (vs.22-24). We must remain firmly connected to the stalk, so we do not wither and die. It is important to learn from the experience of the Jews, so we too are not cut off.

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
Lord, help me to constantly remember that I was grafted in by grace and so remain eternally grateful.
