Scripture Union Daily Guide 24th April 2020 – God judges disobedience and rewards obedience

Scripture Union Daily Guide 24th April 2020

Topic; God judges disobedience and rewards obedience

Open Prayer: As I read your word O Lord, grant me an insight and grace to do your will in Jesus name.

Scripture: Jeremiah 35:1–19

Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
• What is God revealing to me in this passage?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 24 April 2020

Outline: What can we learn from the Rechabites? God challenges his people with their doggedness: They knew and taught their children their roots and history. They could not be cajoled by the prophet into drinking wine contrary to their forefather’s instruction which was required for long life! They understood their priesthood role/vocation, and so did not get distracted with crop production. They were in Jerusalem where people built houses and enjoyed the luxury but they knew they were strangers there, and so lived in tents. Read 1 Peter 2:11.

What is Israel’s sin in vv.15–16? Israel’s refusal to heed God’s repeated warning on their idolatry, provoked him; and he would visit them with calamity. Could there be any besetting sin in our lives (read Proverbs 29:1)! God restated his commitment to reward the Rechabites’ obedience with everlasting priesthood (vv.18–19; Ephesians 6:1–2). In the same way, all who are willing and obedient to God’s instruction for faith and godliness today, will be blessed with eternal life and priesthood (Titus 2:11–14).

⁂ Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Practice/Word Application
• What Next? What specific instruction(s) did God give you in the past that you have abandoned? Take a decision to go back and begin to keep it henceforth.

Prayer
• What a dramatic God you are! Please give me grace to be resolute in obeying you.
• Pray against sexual exploitation and religious intimidation in IDP/refugee camps; pray for the Christians among them to withstand such pressures; also ask for adequate provision and protection in these facilities.
• Offer a prayer of faith in line with Psalm 30:10–11
