TOPIC: Submission to Authorities

OPENING PRAYER: Dear Lord, make me more like you through the power of your word as I meditate on it.

Scripture: Romans 13:1-7

Question(s) for Reflection
• Q 3: Is there any command for me to obey?
• Q 8: Is there any other Biblical passage that can help me understand this passage better?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 25th June 2023 MESSAGE:

This passage should be read together with 1 Timothy 2:1-4. In vs.1-6, identify specific reasons why Christians should obey authorities and the implications of disobedience.

The Bible recognizes the importance of Christians living as good citizens under any properly constituted authority. As at this time of writing, Paul had every reason to condemn the Roman government as anti-Christian. He also had every reason to condemn the Jewish authorities that were constantly at his heels. However, he encouraged the believers to be the best citizens they could be under any civil and/or religious leadership.

Are there times when we should not submit to our rulers? We should never allow government to force us to disobey God. Jesus and His apostles never disobeyed the government for personal reasons. When they disobeyed, it was to follow and be loyal to God, the highest authority. See Acts 4:18-20. They readily paid the prize of disobedience. If we too are compelled to disobey secular or ecclesiastical authorities, we must be prepared to pay the prize.

What other duties of godly and responsible citizens are there in vs.6,7 and 1 Timothy 2:1-2? How faithful are you in paying the right amount of tax and duties?

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
