Scripture Union Daily Guide 27th October 2020 Message
The people obviously paid a painful price for the nation’s prosperity during the reign of Solomon, hence their demand for a change. Often people in Rehoboam’s position fail to understand the struggle ordinary people are going through. When told that her French subjects had no bread, Marie–Antoinette, bride of France’s King Louis XVI, supposedly retorted, “Let them eat cake.” What is the situation in your country today? Are there people willing to challenge the corruption, excesses and injustice by rulers? Is the Church also part of this challenge? What can you do as an individual?

Rehoboam’s decisions are a reminder of the need to surround ourselves with wise counsel. He missed the blessing of wise counsel from elders (v.8) but followed the young people who advised him to be a hard master (v.14). He hence missed the blessings the wise could have brought him. Servant–leadership is a sign of obedience to Jesus Christ whose humility is well attested to in Philippians 2:6–8 and displayed when he washed the feet of his disciples (John 13:14─15).
God was involved in the story. Rehoboam’s stupid action became an avenue for the fulfilment of an earlier prophecy (v.15). Similarly, the Lord used Shemaiah to declare the Lord’s position that prevented war and the shedding of blood. The story of Rehoboam should serve as a wakeup call to all as we make decisions in life.
