Topic: Pride and Self Confidence

Opening Prayer: Let me know more of you today dear Lord as I meditate on your word.

Scripture: Obadiah1–15

Reflection
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Is there any command for me to obey?

Outline: We will need to read vv.1–4 in conjunction with Numbers 20:14–22, to be abreast of the selfishness and arrogance of Edom against her brother Jacob (Israel). The doom predicted against Edom, descendants of Esau, is a lesson for us not to carry hatred too far. We must always ask God for the grace of forgiveness. We must also not allow quarrel between our parents extend to the children, no matter the strong reason for the quarrel. Read vv.5–9 again and note the extent of God’s anger against Edom.

Compare vv.10–14 to Romans 12:17–21. How do you fare in this issue of keeping malice and revenge? What should the Church do to reduce acrimonies between nations and tribes in Africa? V.15 tends to have universal application to all persecutors of Israel and by extension all who persecute the Church in its present form. All who are in alliance against the people of God will soon find out that in comparison to God, all such trust is frail, fickle and false (v.7).

The scripture that pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall was very true of Edom.

Practice/Word Application
• So what? Meditate on Proverbs 3:5–7.

Hymn – Alleluia! sing to Jesus!
1. Alleluia! sing to Jesus!
His the scepter, His the throne.
Alleluia! His the triumph,
His the victory alone.
Hark! the songs of peaceful Zion
Thunder like a mighty flood.
Jesus out of every nation
Has redeemed us by His blood.

2. Alleluia! not as orphans
Are we left in sorrow now;
Alleluia! He is near us,
Faith believes, nor questions how;
Though the cloud from sight received Him
When the forty days were o’er
Shall our hearts forget His promise,
I am with you evermore?

Prayer Points
• Pray against tribal wars between close neighbours and villages.
• Pray to walk in the power that raised Jesus from the dead.
• Offer a prayer of faith in line with Numbers 23:19
