Topic: Pursuit of Peace

Opening Prayer: “Help me dear Lord to meet with you as I meditate on your word in Jesus name”. Psalm 120: 1 ─ 7

Reflection:
• What is God revealing to me in this passage?

Today’s Message: Scripture Union Daily Guide 29th August 2020

This Psalm is the first of the fifteen (120–134) which are here put together under the title “songs of ascents”. They were sung by those who journeyed to the Temple for the Jewish annual festivals. The Psalmist portrays an example of how to relate with an enemy that would not relent or how to handle a nagging problem.

Notice what he did in vv.1–2? The Apostle James in his letter tells how powerful and destructive the tongue can be (see James 3:6).We must learn from the example of the author of this Psalm that when men revile us, we must turn to the Lord for his intervention (v.1).

Read about what Jesus tells us to do in such circumstance in Luke 6:22–23. The God of truth is, and will be, the protector of his people from lying lips (see Psalm 37:6). The fate of a false tongue is foretold in vv.3 and 4. Read vv.5 and 6 again.

The Psalmist here complains of his evil neighbours whom he could only compare with faraway and godless Gentiles of Meshech and Kedar. Indeed, he had been forced to live among wicked people, who were, upon many accounts, troublesome to him.

⁂ Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Practice/Word Application:
Thought: What does v.7 mean to you personally and how will you now respond to people who try to make your life miserable?

Today’s Prayer:
• Read Psalm 86:7 and turn it into a prayer of thanksgiving.
• Pray and commit the work and studies of the coming week into God’s hand.
• Offer a prayer of faith in line with Proverbs 2:6

Read the Bible in one Year: Psalms 129–131; 2 Cor. 9
