TOPIC: Jesus and the Authority over Demons

OPENING PRAYER: Dear Lord, grant me understanding and illumination as I ponder on your word in Jesus name.

SCRIPTURE: Mark 5:1-20

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION
• Q 1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Q 2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 29th January 2023 MESSAGE

As at the time of writing this, the Taliban soldiers just pushed US and her soldiers out of Afghanistan after 20 years of standing in the gap for them. Destruction of lives and property, execution of Christians and vandalization of places of importance became the order of the day.

Read again vs.2-5 and see what Satan specializes in doing. Anyone seeing the man’s plight is likely to be intimidated and afraid. Satan comes only to steal, kill, destroy, and molest. We do not know how old the man could have been but imagine being in this state for so many years until the Son of Man showed up in his village. The whole event appears so dramatic. Jesus is still in the business of bringing relief to any soul in pains and afflictions.

Read vs.6-20 again and observe what happens when Jesus takes over the rulership from Satan (vs.7-10). The demons saw the ministry of the Gospel as an “interference” in their affairs (v.7, NLT).

No wonder we may face conflicts in our efforts to win souls for Jesus. What examples to emulate can we observe in the man from vs.18-20? His changed life was enough a message to people in those ten cities, but he still “proclaimed the great things Jesus had done for him” (v.20).

PRACTICE/WORD APPLICATION
And so? Proclaim the Gospel with your mouth but also tell it by the way you live.
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

HYMN: Love Divine

Love divine, all loves excelling,
Joy of Heav’n to earth come down;
Fix in us thy humble dwelling;
All thy faithful mercies crown!
Jesus, Thou art all compassion,
Pure unbounded love Thou art;
Visit us with Thy salvation;
Enter every trembling heart.

Breathe, O breathe Thy loving Spirit,
Into every troubled breast!
Let us all in Thee inherit;
Let us find that second rest.
Take away our bent to sinning;
Alpha and Omega be;
End of faith, as its beginning,
Set our hearts at liberty.

Come, Almighty to deliver,
Let us all Thy life receive;
Suddenly return and never,
Never more Thy temples leave.
Thee we would be always blessing,
Serve Thee as Thy hosts above,
Pray and praise Thee without ceasing,
Glory in Thy perfect love.

Finish, then, Thy new creation;
Pure and spotless let us be.
Let us see Thy great salvation
Perfectly restored in Thee;
Changed from glory into glory,
Till in Heav’n we take our place,
Till we cast our crowns before Thee,
Lost in wonder, love, and praise.

CLOSING PRAYER
Dear Lord, help me to follow you even after receiving my needed miracles.
