Scripture Union Daily Guide 2nd November 2020 Message

Topic: Messing life up for your children

Opening Prayer: My dear heavenly Father, as I study your word, let it be a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.

Scripture: 1 Kings 15:25 ─ 34

Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?

Message: God warned his people that he punishes children of evil doers to the fourth generation but will do good to those who obey his commands (Exodus 20:5–6). Consequently, Jeroboam courted the wrath of the Lord and messed up the future of his children (1 Kings 14:6 ─ 11). We see in this passage Nadab, his son, doing evil before the Lord because that is what he grew up seeing done. He suffers a violent end as did all his father’s house because of the sin of his father, as prophesied by prophet Ahijah the Shilonite (14:6–11).

God’s punishment on Jeroboam was meted out on his children. Is it fair that you should cause your innocent children, even those unborn today, to suffer for your sin? Reflect what God says in Ezekiel 18:1─24 on holding individuals responsible for their own sins! Baasha was used by God to put an end to an evil dynasty in Israel. With what kind of rule did he replace it (v.34)? He did not learn from Jeroboam’s fate but continued in the same sins for the twenty–four years of his reign (vv.33–34). How unfortunate! Today, some leaders and ordinary people, including Christians, fail to learn from the mistakes of others. Take a few minutes to reflect on the reasons people tend to disobey God.
