TOPIC: A Dead Conscience Is A Dangerous Guide

Opening Prayer: Grant me depth of insight, revelation and knowledge as I meditate on this passage, O Lord.

Scripture: 1 Kings 16:15-34

Reflection
• Is there any warning for me to heed?
• What is God revealing to me in this passage?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 4th November 2020 Message

It seems it was now becoming a tradition in Israel to ascend to the throne through coups. The leadership seems to have had damaged consciences, (1 Timothy 4:2). You had to kill to remain in power over a nation God had chosen to fulfil his plans. A damaged conscience becomes insensitive to the prompting of the Holy Spirit.

The surprising thing is that Israel’s leaders seemed to have learnt more about evil than they had learnt about what God demanded of them. How could Israel live to please God with such leaders? Zimri ruled for 7 days only! It seems the majority in the army preferred Omri to Zimri. Zimri came to the throne through violence and through violence he was deposed, (Matthew 26:52). Omri was a strong leader who survived the civil war and ruled for 12 years and even went on to build Samaria, a more fortified capital for Israel.

Unfortunately, strong leadership is not strong faith; he too led Israel to sin and incurred God’s wrath. Ahab, his son and successor equally did what was evil in God’s sight, (v.30). Note what was said about both Omri and his son Aham in verses 25 & 30 Israel had six kings during the reign of king Asa of Judah alone. What do you think made this difference in these two kingdoms? What lessons do you draw from that?

⁂ Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
