Topic: The Temple of the Lord

Opening Prayer: Grant me grace dear Lord to apply what you will teach me today as I read this passage.

Scripture: 1 Kings 5: 1 ─ 6:8

Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
• What is God revealing to me in this passage?

Today we are reading some of the heritage David left behind for his descendants and successors. First is the heritage of godliness. He was always in tune with God. He was a man after God’s own heart. His son could refer to God as the Lord his God. The second is the heritage of peace. He fought against the enemies of God until the Lord “put them under the soles of his feet.”

Many of us fight a lot of battles today in order that our children may not have “adversaries or misfortunes” (v.4b). The third heritage is friendship. Solomon enjoyed the fruit of international friendship that existed between King Hiram of Tyre and his father. He tapped into that by requesting the assistance of Hiram in the building of the Lord’s Temple. Notice the shrewdness of Hiram as a businessman (vv.8–11).

The massive construction also required a large labour force which Solomon had to conscript from among his people and elsewhere. This was to be a root cause for the split in the kingdom later (1 Kings 12:4). The people had such a respect for the Lord God that the Temple had to be built without the sound of hammer, chisel or any other iron tool (6:7)! How do we demonstrate our reverence to God in our worship?
