Scripture Union Daily Guide 7th December 2020 Message

Topic: Sin Has Consequence

Opening Prayer: Plant my steps in the sure promises of your word today, dear Lord.

Scripture: Jeremiah 52:1–16

Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
• Is there any warning for me to heed?

This chapter is essentially a historical appendix to the earlier chapters and is almost identical in content to 2 Kings 24–25:21, 27–30, which is also summarized in Jeremiah 39:1–10. In today’s passage, we are reminded that Zedekiah was evil and that he was responsible for the calamities that were witnessed in Judah as a result of God’s anger (vv.2–3). The siege and the capture of Jerusalem (vv.4–7), the killing of his sons and his life imprisonment (vv.10–11), as well as the burning of Jerusalem show that Jeremiah’s prophecies were actually fulfilled. But, all these need not to have happened had Zedekiah and other kings before him governed with righteousness and the people of Judah responded in repentance to God’s many warnings through Jeremiah and other prophets! The wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). Zedekiah chose this path through his evil ways and as a result destruction and death followed. What kind of history are you writing through what you do in life? Are you marked for eternal death or eternal life? The choice is yours!

⁂ Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
