Scripture Union Daily Guide 4 July 2023 Outline:
This is a psalm of thanksgiving used probably to celebrate God’s deliverance of Zion (Jerusalem) from an invading army. Many commentators think that this might be the deliverance from Sennacherib and the Assyrian army in the time of Hezekiah (2 Kings 19).
Observe the graphic description of how the kings gathered and moved against Jerusalem to capture it (v.4) but God prevented them from entering the city (vs.5-7). The psalmist declares he had heard of such deliverances in times past, and now had seen them (v.8). It is for this that he chose to offer great praises to the great God and King, who dwells in Zion and defends it (vs.1-3).
Like Zion, the church of Jesus Christ, His dwelling place (Matthew 18:20; 28:20; Hebrews 12: 22-24), has been and will continue to be attacked. However, we can praise God for how He has protected the church in the last 2000 years and for assurance of His continual protection (vs.9-12). We should teach our children what God has done (v.13; cf. Psalm 78: 1-7) so that they can believe, love, and obey Him. And together we would serve Him forever (v.14).
