Scripture Union Daily Guide 7 July 2023 Outline
We are free to choose the way we live our lives, but we are not free from the consequences it attracts. In today’s passage, we read how Moses, after receiving the tablets of the Ten Commandments from God, on coming down from the mountain in company of Joshua, heard a lot of noise from the camp. The people were singing and dancing, worshipping the new god (gold calf) made by Aaron (vs.17,18). Beware; not all types of worship are godly! Worship that is not centred on God is mere noise. Such worship is totally repulsive to God.
Notice what Moses did in vs.19-21, 26-30, when he saw the golden calf and the celebrations. We learn from him not to continue in sin while pleading for mercy and forgiveness. True repentance demands that we first deal harshly with the root cause of sin.
The Levites showed clearly that there is no sitting on the fence with God: you are either for Him or you are against Him. They promptly identified with Moses and obeyed his tough instruction to slaughter the idolaters. For aligning with Moses (and God), they were “set apart to the Lord” (v.29).
