Topic: Living in the Light With God

Opening Prayer: My dear heavenly Father, as I study your word, let it be a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.

Scripture: 1 John 1:1-10

Introduction to 1 John
The first Epistle of John, with his other two Epistles, was written by John son of Zebedee and brother of James, a very close disciple of Jesus Christ. This John is also referred to as John the Beloved. This Epistle is probably written anytime between AD.85 and 90, before his banishment to the island of Patmos. This Epistle is a general Epistle to the Churches. That is to say it was not addressed to any particular church but to all believers/churches. Key messages espoused in this Epistle include caution against sin, the command to love, warnings against false teachers (Antichrist), and their heresies, and the admonition to walk in the light.

Reflection
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• What is God revealing to me in this passage?

Scripture Union Daily Guide Saturday 20 June 2020 Message

The writer, John the son of Zebedee, was the disciple who appeared to be closest to Jesus. He wrote out of his personal experience and knowledge of Jesus, based on the intimacy of his own encounter (vv.1–3a). What, according to vv.3b–4, are two of the purposes for his letter? John assures us that there is joy in having a personal encounter with Jesus. He is not sharing fake news. He experienced that first hand. So, make it your aim to be in true fellowship with the Father and our Lord, Jesus Christ. The proof of our fellowship with God is not so much in our words but much more in our lifestyle. That is how we “practise the truth” (v. 6b). Since God is light and everything about us is plain before him, we only deceive ourselves and others, may be, when we pretend to be true Christians, when we are not Vv.8 and 10 give the true picture of what we really are before God ─ self–righteous and self–deceiving individuals. But the Good News is in v. 9. Memory Verse: 1 John 1:9.

Practice/Word Application
• So: Read vv.6–7 again and spend time to do what v.9 admonishes us to do.

Prayer Points
• Lord, help me to live in a Christlike life.
• Pray for deeper knowledge in your studies.
• Offer a prayer of faith in line with Genesis 27:29
