The Upper Room Daily Devotional 9th February 2023 by Øystein Brinch (Oslo, Norway). As you study today’s devotional, remember this; “Work hard so you can present yourself to God and receive his approval. Be a good worker, one who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly explains the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15 (NLT)

TOPIC:  Light from a Cross

TODAY’S READING
John 8:12-19

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” – John 8:12 (NIV)

The Upper Room Daily Devotional 9th February 2023 MESSAGE

On Christmas Day, 2020, I was sitting in my friend’s living room in Tønsberg, Norway, looking at the old watchtower on top of Fortress Hill. Churches were closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. I had not seen my children and grandchildren since March, and I felt lonely and sorry for myself — in spite of being with my friend.

To my surprise, I noticed that on top of the tower a large cross spread its light over all the town. I sensed new feelings within me, as if my gloomy thoughts and self-pity must yield to the light from the cross.

Jesus told us he is the light of the world. And in that moment it was as if Jesus was assuring me, “You are never alone as long as I am with you, and I have not and will never forsake you. Darkness will give way to dawn. Wait and see.” I rested my eyes on the cross that shined light not only over the town but in my heart as well — and I was comforted.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear God, thank you for your light in the world and in our lives. Thank you for your love that never leaves us alone. Amen.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
The light of Christ is stronger than my loneliness.

PRAYER FOCUS
Those isolated from family and friends
