Scripture Union Daily Guide 24th June 2023 MESSAGE:
The current spate of attacks that Christians have experienced in many parts of Africa and in particular, the horn of Africa, has made it challenging to practically fulfil the call to hospitality. It is difficult to differentiate between a friend and an enemy. While that is not a problem in the church among believers, it is becoming a challenge to know who to trust and care for in the way the scripture enjoins us. Share your experience and how you care for those who do not belong to the church. How can we practise the command, “In honour giving preference to one another” among us as Christians (v.10; cf. Philippians 2:1-8)?
As if that were not challenging enough, Paul urges us to pray for our persecutors and be there to help those who cause us havoc. How do you practically care for someone who carries a weapon to unleash it on you (vs.17-21)? Challenging! We do need God’s help. What is the implication of v.18 (cf. Hebrews 12:14)?
Identifying with people in their joy and sorrow has always been a strong culture of the African community. While the Covid and other barriers have hindered people from caring for one another as they would normally do, it is important that we do not lose this quality in our lives and communities.
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
CLOSING PRAYER
Lord, deliver our communities from those who make it difficult to care for one another.
