TOPIC: Rescued from the Tyranny of the Law

OPENING PRAYER: Dear Lord, I pray that you order my steps today through your word as I meditate on it.

SCRIPTURE: Romans 7:1 – 13

Question(s) for Reflection
• Q 7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?
• Q 8: Is there any other Biblical passage that can help me understand this passage better?

MESSAGE: It is easier for many people to follow dos and don’ts of the law than to understand the freedom that we have in Christ. Paul used the example of marriage to explain the reason believers are no longer under the law. A woman is tied to her husband by the law of marriage only when they are both alive. If the husband dies, she is immediately free. When we accept Christ as Lord and Saviour, we die to the law and get joined to Christ in a new life. Like a woman in a new state because the husband is dead, so are we also in a new state because we now belong to Christ.

Notice the fruits we bore while under the lordship of our old husband (sin) and those that should result from being under the lordship of Christ, the One who died to release us from sin (vs.4-6). Compare Galatians 5:16-26 where Paul expounds on the old and new life: life in the flesh (in the natural, the legal, under the law and sin) and life under the control of the Holy Spirit.

Going to church, paying tithes, etc., do not make us better Christians if we do not allow the Holy Spirit to work in our hearts in a way that takes away the need to rely on the law.

Practice/Word Application
Thought: Meditate on Ephesians 2:8-10.
