Scripture Union Daily Guide 6 April 2023 MESSAGE
The night before this, Jesus had been arrested and brought before the Sanhedrin Council. He was found guilty of blasphemy. However, when they brought him before Pilate they accused Him of treason, not blasphemy (vs.2,9&12, cf. John 18:33-37). Tax evasion, claiming to be king, and causing riots all over the country are issues of serious concern to any government and could attract capital punishment. The Sanhedrin’s power was limited by Roman rule. Only Pilate, and not their council, had the legal right to pronounce capital sentence.
Read vs.6-15 again. Though Pilate was an experienced politician and administrator, notice his moral weakness as a leader. Indecision, compromise, lack of courage to do what is right, giving in to pressure groups, fear of losing favour or position, too weak to stand for the truth, etc, were all seen in Pilate. Are all these familiar in today’s leadership in our offices, community, churches, and nation? Great evil can happen when truth is at the mercy of political considerations. The people on their part preferred the release of a murderer to Jesus who has committed no crime. Do we still have similar blind following in our society today?
Practice/Word Application
What to do: Many people suffer because leaders are morally weak and cannot stand for the truth, refusing to take responsibility because of political/selfish considerations. Pray for yourself, your church and political leaders to have the courage to do the right thing.
